The Autobiography of David Frank Miller
I am not sure where to begin. Anyone who knows me understands I am not a writer. So, I take on this task the way a kid takes on homework...
My journey begins October 1978. In land far, far away, also known as New Jersey. Yup! I am a Jersey boy. Possibly the only one who says “y'all”! I know, sad, but true.
I grew up on a ski mountain in a little town called Vernon, New Jersey. I spent most of those years with my older brother and sister snow skiing, almost every day. I grew to love skiing and became pretty good at it. I would get off the school bus and hit the slopes until it was time to go home for dinner. Through my early teenage years, my parents and I would make family trips to Hilton Head Island for vacation. Then, it happened! My dad got the golf bug and that was it. Just before I started high school we were on the move to Hilton Head where I joined track and field in high school as a pole vaulter. I became the Lower State Champion and then second place in State.
My first job was at Hilton Head Ice Cream. It’s still around today. I learned a lot from my boss. I loved working! I learned how to make homemade ice cream. I did deliveries and served ice cream to customers. I liked to do deliveries the most and that is where I learned how to drive a stick shift.
Upon high school graduation I enrolled in Georgia Southern University. I attended for a year before deciding on a different path for my future. After leaving college, I worked for my parents business, they were home builders. While learning the trade I studied for and received multiple licenses and certifications. During this experience I found that HVAC is where my passion was so I left my father’s business at the age of 20 to start my own. Armed with my residential and commercial building licenses, along with my mechanical license I began this venture in 1999 with a loan of $3,000.00 and a truck from my parents.
Being new to the industry, I knew I needed the help of a seasoned professional, George Lee. Mr. Lee had been working for my parents for many years, completing all the HVAC installations in the homes they built. He was very well known in the area as well as very respected by colleagues and customers alike. George and I worked together, starting Superior Heating & Air, Inc. and paid back the loan in our first month. After five years, George returned to his own company. I owe a lot to George and appreciate every day we worked together and all that he taught me. We still catch up from time to time.
In 2013 a few new chapters began in my life. The birth of my oldest child, Mason. Marrying my wife Nicole. Building a house. Then, in 2014, Nicole and I welcomed our twins, Jackson and Maddison! I am very happy with where my personal life has taken me and the support I have from my family.
With the strict nature of my education, parents who were attentive and cared about what I did, where I was, and who I was friends with allowed me to make the right choices growing up and helped me to become the hard worker I am today. So, what started as two men, a truck, and a vision has turned into a company with over 20 vehicles and 25 team members strong, spanning the LowCountry and Charleston. Our own branded line of equipment and an every present goal of being the best. I am excited to see what the future holds!
